APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Begin application process with the help of a Knight recruiter at your local terminal. This includes screening, testing and DOT qualification. The following are required to enroll in the truck driver training program:

Passing of written exam

CDL instruction permit from your home state

Passing of skills test

After qualifications are met, you will generally begin training within a week. Knight will not make you sign any contracts to begin our commercial driver’s license (CDL) program. You will begin CDL school at Knight’s Phoenix terminal.

PROGRAM: While most truck driving companies are reluctant to take on new recruits, training drivers is part of PAM’s mission. We partner with driving schools to help pay students’ tuition and guarantee them driving jobs upon graduation. PAM has standing agreements with truck driving schools to offer company-sponsored CDL training that comes with a job upon completion. Finish a training course, work for PAM for a year, and we’ll cover most of your tuition.

Do you have at least 12 months of OTR Experience in the last 3 years?

YRC FREIGHT

PROGRAM: Keep in mind, first of all, that YRC's company-sponsored training requires that students live within commuting distance of their Chicago, IL terminal. That said, it can be an excellent opportunity for the right candidates. Students will have to provide their own meals, as well as have their doubles/triples and tanker endorsements and TSA letter of approval for Hazmat.

DURATION: The training academy is 4 weeks, as is the on-the-road training portion (160 hours). New drivers will start on linehaul routes from the Chicago terminal. YRC runs mostly terminal-to-terminal LTL freight, so drivers will normally be home 2.5 days out of every 7.

YRC's starting pay is much higher than average, and is union-contract pay. Also it should be noted that they run a CDL program for dock-workers in their terminals, as well. The training itself seems pretty standard for large companies like YRC, but the benefits of employment look exceptional.

Driver Solutions

PROGRAM: Driver Solutions is a recruiting company that matches drivers with an entry-level truck driving job working for a trucking company that will cover the upfront tuition costs of truck driver training.

Driver Solutions has teamed up with PAM Transport. If you don’t currently have a CDL drivers license, Driver Solutions will find a truck driving school for you to attend and have PAM sponsor you through the program. That way, you are able to obtain your CDL with very few upfront costs and repay the tuition over the course of one year. The tuition costs ends up being split by your sponsored company and you.

What are all of the up-front costs?

Spend your first week working with our CDL instructors at one of our Jim Palmer Trucking Training Centers. You will earn your permit within 2-3 days. You will spend the rest of the week learning the skills you need to continue your training, before heading out over-the-road with a professional CDL instructor for a one-on-one, real-world training experience. The first two weeks are spent at the training facility approximately 10hr days, 6 days per week (accelerated course). This includes a mix of classroom, pre-trip, local driving, and backing practice. After approximately 2 weeks, the CDL exam is administered.
